On this day – November 24,1963 – In Dallas, Texas, Lee Harvey Oswald is murdered by Jack Ruby in the basement of Dallas police department headquarters. The shooting happened to be broadcast live on television.
Oswald was suspected of assassinating President John F. Kennedy and seriously wounding Texas Governor John B. Connally two days earlier on November 22. He had been captured and charged with the murder of both the President and police officer J. D. Tippit the same day as the shootings.
Jack Ruby was convicted of the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, March 14, 1964, Ruby appealed the conviction and death sentence. As a date for his new trial was being set, he became ill and died of lung cancer on January 3, 1967.
