On this day – August 9, 1969 – Followers led by Charles Manson murder pregnant actress Sharon Tate (wife of Roman Polanski), coffee heiress Abigail Folger, Polish actor Wojciech Frykowski, men’s hairstylist Jay Sebring and recent high-school graduate Steven Parent.
Manson was an unemployed ex-convict, who had spent half of his life in correctional institutions for a variety of offenses who led what became known as the Manson Family, a quasi-commune that arose in California in the late 1960s.
Manson directed Watson to take Atkins, Linda Kasabian, and Patricia Krenwinkel to “that house where Melcher used to live” and “totally destroy everyone in [it], as gruesome as you can.
